The Benefits of Yoga
Calmness of the Mind
Contrary to the go-go-go of our busy days, yoga helps us to slow down - and calm. As we work to unite body, mind and breath, we begin to quiet the mind and become present. As we develop a greater sense of calm we develop a more positive overall outlook.
Yoga promotes relaxation, lowering levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, reducing the negative effects of stress on the body. The breathing exercises, meditation and physical postures of yoga demand our concentration, helping us to take our attention away from our daily stresses and worry.
Not only does yoga help to improve our balance, alignment and posture, it also gives us a deeper awareness and understanding of our body. The more we practice yoga the better we learn to listen to our body and respond to its needs. Yoga improves our attitude toward our body and brings greater self-confidence.
Flexibility is one of the many benefits that comes with regular practice. As we stretch and open the body, we bring a greater range of motion to our muscles and joints, resulting in less pain, greater ease and comfort in movement, and a decreased risk of injury.
Yoga increases our physical strength and stamina. As we practice yoga poses, we use all the muscles in the body, not only relieving muscular tension but increasing our physical strength.
Ease of Pain
Yoga can help to ease pain from many chronic conditions as well as new and old injuries. The simple combination of breath and movement helps us to release in commonly tense and tight areas, helping us to find new comfort and freedom in our body.
Yoga teaches slower, deeper breathing. It helps us to breathe more fully into the deeper parts of the lungs where oxygen is most efficiently processed, improving lung function and capacity. Proper breathing promotes relaxation and benefits the entire body, physically and mentally.
The Body Systems
Yoga stimulates all the bodily systems including the nervous, circulatory, respiratory, digestive and immune systems. The various yoga postures massage and improve the overall function of internal organs and help to flush out toxins in the body. Yoga calms the nervous system, improves respiratory function and helps to improve circulation, bringing oxygen-rich blood to the body’s cells, nourishing the body.
